What is the education of a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine

A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine obtains a degree from one of the four federally accredited schools in the US.  Their education  consists of extensive training in the biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, laboratory assessment and pharmaceuticals. They are also extensively trained in natural therapeutics: homeopathy, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, counseling, naturopathic physical medicine and Oriental medicine.  This training consists both of classroom hours, 4200 post graduate hours, and clinical training, 1200 hours with a supervising physician.  They are also required to pass a national board exam prior to obtaining their license as a primary care physician.  Currently there are 15 states that license ND’s as primary care physicians, but NY is not one of them.  Currently NY is in  legislation to obtain licensure for naturopathic doctors.  If  you would like more information on this process or support this effort  visit our state association website at www.nyanp.com
